What Are Crowns?
Crowns, also referred to as “caps,” put aesthetic and function back into compromised teeth. Most often crafted of porcelain, crowns encase the entire tooth structure and are custom-made to accommodate the unique dentition of the patient.
Before the crown is placed, the dentist removes any decay and damaged enamel to prepare the surface for maximum adhesion. A temporary crown is used for the first two weeks (approximately) while the patient’s permanent crown is crafted by the lab. The permanent crown is shaped and colored-matched to blend in seamlessly with the surrounding teeth. Once placed, the permanent crown fully restores the look, feel and function of the tooth.
What Are Natural Looking Permanent Bridges?
Dental bridges offer an innovative way to replace teeth adjacent to one another. For patients missing one to four adjacent teeth due to injury, decay or dilapidation, bridges often provide an optimal solution. Bridges are composed of prosthetic teeth that span the space between two abutment teeth. The abutment crowns are attached to healthy teeth to form opposite ends of the bridge, and act as anchor points to hold the prosthetic teeth in place. Bridges are customized to fit comfortably and to look naturally in the patient’s mouth.
Not only do bridges restore normal oral functionality and aesthetics, but they also support sound structural health. By filling the gap, the prosthetic teeth prevent other teeth from gradually sinking inwards towards the missing teeth.
Traditionally, bridges are constructed by fusing prosthetic teeth made of porcelain to a metal frame. Like crowns, bridges require two or more appointments, and patients will first be issued a temporary crowns while their permanent restoration is crafted in the lab.
